(     Briefly describe the main theme(s) in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:30-37)

The main themes of these verses are the superiority of Hazrat Adam (A.S) over Angels and about the nature of Iblis (satan). Hazrat Adam's superiority was due to knowledge. These verses tell us that Allah (swt) gives knowledge to the one of his own choice.

Allah (swt) commanded all the angels to prostrate to Adam (A.S). All the angels prostrated, but iblis (satan) did not prostrate. Allah (swt) asked him that why did you not prostrate to Adam? In response, he started giving foolish arguments in his opinion that ‘’I am made of fire and he is made of clay.’’ (Sureh Al-Aaraf:12)

Satan's Revenge

Hazrat Adam (A.S) and Hazrat Hawwa (R.A)  lived in paradise. They were not allowed to eat the fruit of a certain tree. iblis (satan) told Hazrat Adam (A.S) that after eating the fruit of this tree, you will get eternal life. Hazrat Adam (A.S) refused, so he made his point firm. He swore a false oath to Allah (swt) to deceive Hazrat Adam (A.S). Hazrat Adam (A.S) accepted his words thinking that how can anyone swear falsely to Allah? So they ate the fruit of the forbidden tree and because of this Allah (swt) sent them from heaven to earth.

After coming to earth from heaven, Hazrat Adam (A.S) kept crying for about three hundred years and did not look at the sky because of his modesty towards Allah (swt). Then Allah (swt) put this supplication in his heart: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves and if you do not forgive us and have mercy upon us we will surely be among losers. " Sureh Al-Aaraf:23
